Clean and stage your home
Limit personal belongings like photographs, religious figurines, toys and knick-knacks. The idea is to show off your space instead of showing off your stuff. Plus, you’ll want de-clutter your home as well. For example, you may be able to get away with staging your master bedroom with just your bed, inviting bedding, two end tables, two lamps and 1 decor piece on the end table. Keep it clean and clear so that someone can truly see the available space.
Also, make sure to have an element of black within your space, mirrors to help to diffuse natural light, some bit of greenery, and some glass elements. Also, have one focal point in each room. If it’s a bedroom, the focal point could be the bed or a fireplace.
Use as much natural light as possible
Open up your curtains and turn on all the lights. Opt for light bulbs that are daylight versus light bulbs that are cozy and warm. Natural light looks much more inviting than using light bulbs to brighten a room. More natural light when taking photos will reduce the need for editing.
Shoot from an angle
You’ll want to shoot your images from the corner in order to showcase the full scope of the room. Depending on room size this could require a specific camera lens to capture all the features. Do some research on wide angle lenses and choose one that can capture the dimensions you want. You can also take your images from the doorway if possible. Kneeling down a bit to get images from different angles allows you to choose from various shots. The ideal angle is usually 4-5ft from the floor and a level photo. Find the right position in the room to capture the most subject matter.
Take many photos
You’ll want a couple different photos of each area from which to choose. Luckily with a digital camera you’ll have the ability to take multiple images. Don’t hold back. You never know what shot you take is going to be the one you’ll want to post for your listing.
Touch up the photos
If you have some design skills, you can touch up your photos using Adobe or a similar type of software. There are numerous free versions available. One free option to touch up photos is also the website GIMP. Or you can also touch up photographs using Canva.
Don’t overdo the touch-ups of your photos! Sometimes less is more. You don’t want your photos to look too overdone. They should still appear to be as natural as possible.
